Trumbull officials review funds requests for ambulances

WARREN — Trumbull County commissioners are expected to vote on whether to approve requests by three communities to use American Rescue Plan funds to provide ambulances.

Girard, Champion and Bazetta each asked the county to pay for new ambulances so they can provide or continue to supply emergency medical services to their communities.

The combined amount requested from the three communities will be $579,142 from the county’s ARP funds. Another community, Braceville, also is waiting to see if its request to use $175,000 from the county’s ARP funds to purchase a new ambulance is approved.

Girard is seeking $225,842, which is the highest amount of all of the ambulance requests. Girard will be starting its ambulance service from scratch after a 20-year absence.

In the city’s application, fire Chief James Petruzzi argued the addition of a fire department-based ambulance will enable the department to provide emergency transport services to about 9,500 persons, 4,183 households and 258 businesses in the city.

Girard residents have been paying up to $530,000 a year for a private ambulance service.

The estimated costs for the ambulance will include $146,450 for the vehicle, $63,000 for the Stryker power load and power cot system and $16,392 for graphics, paint, a monitor mount and oxygen mounts.

Champion requested $153,300 to replace a 2014 ambulance with more than 110,000 miles on it. The actual cost of the vehicle is projected to be $175,000.

Champion has three ambulances, seven full-time firefighters and eight part-time firefighters.

Braceville fire Chief Tod Garland asked for $175,000 for the purchase of a new ambulance. The township is expected to receive up to $6,000 for its current 2009 ambulance.
