Man, 19, indicted in South Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — Joshua L. Mahone, 19, Woodside Avenue, was indicted Thursday on a charge of felonious assault with a firearm specification in the Jan. 11 shooting of a man in a home on Lakewood Avenue on the South Side.

The victim was found shot in the back when police arrived for the 6:28 p.m. incident. The officer found the man lying on the living room floor stating he had been shot in the back. Ambulance personnel arrived shortly after and took him to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition by medical staff.

Mahone turned himself in to law enforcement after an arrest warrant was issued in Youngstown Municipal Court. After Mahone’s arraignment, he was released from jail. If convicted, Mahone could get more than eight years in prison.

In a separate case, Austin W. Beatty, 24, of Matta Avenue, and Rebecca E. Wetherill, 23, of Westview Drive, Boardman, were indicted on superseding indictments Thursday.

Beatty and Wetherill are indicted on a charge of felonious assault with two firearm specifications, discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises with two firearm specifications and two misdemeanor counts of criminal damaging or endangering.

Both were indicted last week on similar charges, but last week’s indictments did not include the discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises charge with firearm specifications.

The charges stem from a Dec. 30 incident in which Beatty is accused of shooting into a home on Ninth Street in Struthers.

A car parked in the driveway was struck multiple times, but no one was injured. According to a Struthers police report, officers found six spent shell casings in the street, and later determined another vehicle on Ninth Street also was struck.

The primary victim directed police to Beatty, his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. The man showed police text messages in which Beatty allegedly threatened to shoot up their house.

The man also showed police security camera footage of a car believed to belong to Beatty or a friend of his. The report states it showed the passenger firing at the house and the car before turning around in a neighbor’s driveway and fleeing the scene.

• Gary Mills, 53, Mahoning County jail, violating a protection order.

• Ronald S. Rollins, 56, Mahoning County jail, domestic violence.
