Boardman PD: Spousal affair leads to shooting

Jeff Gilger Sr., 50, charged; wife suffers injuries to leg, hip

BOARDMAN — A township resident is in police custody after he was accused of shooting his wife Thursday night.

The woman is expected to recover from shotgun wounds to her leg and hip. Her husband, Jeff Gilger Sr., 50, is charged with felony domestic violence and felonious assault, according to records from Mahoning County Boardman Court, where he is scheduled Tuesday for an initial appearance.

As of Friday afternoon, Gilger was in the Mahoning County jail.

The report states that officers arrived around 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Gilger’s Grover Drive home, where they found a neighbor tending to his wife in the front yard. She told police Gilger had shot her on her right side and he was still in the house with a shotgun. The woman and neighbor said they heard a second gunshot from inside the house.

The report states that after police moved the woman to a safe distance and set up a perimeter around the house, they called for Gilger and his son, Jeffrey Jr., to exit the house. Jeffrey Jr. came to the door and began yelling out at police.

The report states that he would not comply with commands at first, but then approached them as they instructed. But when an officer tried to handcuff him, Jeffrey Jr. kept pushing her hands away and trying to approach the wounded woman as police were moving her to an ambulance.

The report states that after he disobeyed several commands, an officer struck him with a closed fist in the face and he was handcuffed.

Jeffrey Jr. told police he had taken the shotgun away from his father and disassembled or destroyed it to stop Gilger from harming himself or anyone else with the gun. The report states that police found parts of the gun in the upstairs bathroom and basement laundry area. They also saw a hole in the ceiling above the basement staircase, caused by a gunshot.

Gilger exited the house shortly after his son and was arrested without incident.

The report states he told police he “just lost it” after he discovered his wife was cheating on him. He also said he didn’t mean to shoot her, and that the gun just went off when he stumbled on his bad leg and fell against his pickup truck. However, he also told police that he grabbed the gun after she refused to talk to him.

He told police the gun accidentally fired into the ceiling as he was walking downstairs with it after the shooting.

Boardman police Chief Todd Werth did not respond to a request for comment.
