YOUNGSTOWN — During what is considered the busiest day of the year for pizza delivery — Super Bowl Sunday — a delivery driver was robbed at gunpoint Sunday night in the city’s Brier Hill neighborhood.

Police responded to 2771 Robinwood Place, which is off Burlington Avenue, around 8:40 p.m. after a Papa John’s driver said he was making a delivery from the chain’s Belmont Avenue store in Liberty totaling $75.69. The driver said he began knocking on the door when five black males in their mid-to-late teens wearing hooded sweatshirts pulled tight around their faces approached him from the north side of the apartment complex and said the order was theirs, according to a police report.

The driver told them he needed the money before they could have the food. He said three of the young people grabbed him while the other two pulled out black handguns and placed the guns against his head, the report states.

One of the gunmen said, “I ain’t giving you (expletive)” and grabbed the pizza from him. The second gunman reached into the driver’s pants pocket and took $80 from it. All of the males then ran north before running east on Dupont Street, the report states.

The delivery driver followed the robbers, who tried to run south on Hammaker Street before running north behind 280 Dupont St. He said the gunmen pointed their guns at him while he was running and told him they would shoot him if he continued following them, the report states.

The driver stopped his pursuit, but heard a door slam at one of the apartments. However, he told police he didn’t know which apartment it was.

Officers checked the area for evidence but found nothing. The report states they had not yet been able to view surveillance camera footage from the complex.

The robbery is under investigation.
