Mom faces endangering charge after son, 7, found wandering

BOARDMAN — A local woman is charged with neglect after a passing driver found her young boy wandering the street.

Stephanie Fields, 41, of Boardman, was due in Mahoning County Boardman Court Friday on a misdemeanor charge of endangering children, but court records do not indicate what action the court took in the case or if Fields even appeared for her arraignment.

A Boardman police report states that officers responded to a call from a driver near Glenwood Avenue and Salinas Trail about 6:15 p.m. Thursday when the person saw Fields’ 7-year-old son walking near the road. The report states that the boy was not wearing a shirt, and told the person he was left home alone and was afraid because it was dark outside.

The report states that the boy told police he had no way to reach Fields because his phone battery died and he said he did not know the number where she could be reached. He said he did not know his father’s phone number either, but police did find a number and called him. He arrived quickly to take custody of the boy, the report states.

Police then contacted Fields at her place of employment. She told them she left the boy there so she could go to work, but could not give officers a good reason why the boy was left alone.

When she arrived at the house, police arrested her, the report states.
