Hear ye, hear ye: Weathersfield honors many with proclamations

WEATHERSFIELD — Township trustees recently issued proclamations to recognize the efforts of two Boy Scouts who attained Eagle Scout status.

The officials said they regularly spotlight residents who soar beyond the ordinary.

Achieving Scouting’s highest rank were Noah Potts and James Michael Kaminski Jr.

“I had the privilege of attending the ceremony for both of these young men as they reached their Eagle Scout (rank),” Trustee Ed Whittaker said at the recent meeting. “They both did an excellent job speaking, presenting and expressing gratitude to all those who helped them along the way.”

Potts and Kaminski received lengthy proclamations that detailed their contributions to the community. Potts was commended for one project specifically — a blood drive he organized in July that collected 29 pints of blood and helped more than 80 individuals. Kaminski’s proclamation noted his Eagle Scout project — the installation of a gaga ball pit at Seaborn Elementary School.

The trustees’ commendation was not a one-off event. Such honorary proclamations have been a mainstay at trustees meetings for years.

Last month, the trustees honored Mineral Ridge High School senior Ian Erb, who amassed 1,800 rushing yards, 400 passing yards, 400 receiving yards and 37 total touchdowns for the Rams’ football team.

Proclamations were presented in November to the township’s police officers and volunteer firefighters.

Township administrator David Rouan said the township has been presenting proclamations at the beginning of most trustees meetings for about 10 years.

Rouan said the trustees become aware of certain residents whom they may want to highlight.

“We’re a small community, so we hear about these sorts of things out amongst those in our community,” Rouan said. “People also reach out to the board or myself to make us aware of such things and then the trustees make a determination as to whether or not they will give a proclamation for any given thing.”

Potts and Kaminski also were honored for other achievements in the community as well.

Potts captains the Mineral Ridge cross-country team and participates in the school’s history club, yearbook and rifle team. The honor roll student is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club.

Kaminski was highlighted for extracurricular activities as well as community service efforts at Kerr Cemetery, Niles Cemetery, Mosquito Lake State Park, Camp Stambaugh, Pioneer Scout Reservation and On Target Outfitters.

“It’s very good for our community to recognize those that achieve such things,” Rouan said. “Those young men have worked on that for a number of years.

“Through the Boy Scouts of America and their families, they’ve dedicated a lot of work and it’s a monumental task to get that Eagle Scout award. (The proclamation) is the least the township, and the trustees can do to recognize all their dedication and work.”
