Gunfire kills 2 men in Youngstown in one day
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Police Department is investigating two Sunday homicides in the city.
A man, 18, died after police and firefighters were called to the 300 block of South Truesdale Avenue on the East Side at 9:48 p.m. Sunday for a vehicle that crashed into the woods and a person having been shot. The vehicle also caught fire.
Youngstown safety officials were notified through a 911 call by another 18-year-old man that his friend had been shot in the episode.
When first responders arrived just before 10 p.m. Sunday, they found a vehicle crashed into the woods and a man had been shot. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to a Youngstown police news release.
The 18-year-old who called 911 was not injured, and fire damage to the vehicle was minimal, the release, provided by police early Monday, states.
Youngstown detectives and crime scene investigators, and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Officers responded to the scene and began to investigate the matter as a homicide.
No arrest had been made as of Monday night.
Meanwhile, a man, 32, was shot to death inside an after-hours club at 520 St. Louis Avenue on the South Side early Sunday.
The Youngstown Police Department, in a Monday afternoon press release, called the killing “an act of extreme violence and disregard for human life directed at a particular person.”
The statement added that “At this time, we do not believe it is related to any other event over the weekend.”
Youngstown police were called to the location, known unofficially as “The Bldng,” at 4:40 a.m., for a shooting. About 60 people were “partying” in the club when a man opened fire on the victim, according to the news release.
“Valiant efforts” were made by patrons in the club to provide life-saving measures, but the victim succumbed to his wounds, the release states.
The Youngstown Police Detective Division, crime scene investigation and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office are investigating what police call a “homicide.”
The Youngstown Police Department is asking that anyone with information on the identity of the shooter to “come forward and speak to detectives.” A monetary reward would be made available for information leading to the arrest of the suspect, the release states.
The two Sunday homicides gives the city three for the year.
The first homicide was the Jan. 22 shooting death of Allen P. May, 23, on Evergreen Avenue near Erie Street on the South Side.
Jules L. Freeman, 21, of New Philadelphia, turned himself in Wednesday at Youngstown Municipal Court in the case and was arraigned on complicity to murder, a charge that carries a possible prison sentence of 15 years to life in prison if convicted.
A Youngstown police news release stated after investigating the case Jan. 22, police were able to retrieve evidence and serve a search warrant in New Philadelphia in Tuscarawas County. Police filed the charge against Freeman on Jan. 30.
Freeman, released from the Mahoning County jail Thursday after posting a $275,000 bond, is due back in court at 9 a.m. Monday for a preliminary hearing. He also is on electronically monitored house arrest, according to Youngstown Municipal Court records.
