Convicted arsonist sentenced in additional case

WARREN — Following his Feb. 1 sentencing in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, a Youngstown man was sentenced again for a separate offense Wednesday.

Austin Dunmire, 26, of Dearborn Street, was sentenced by Judge Cynthia Rice to a recommended 12 months in the Lorain Correctional Institution on three counts of harassment with bodily substances by an inmate and vandalism.

“You’re really lucky I went along with this agreement,” Rice said as Dunmire pleaded guilty and waived his right to a jury trial.

Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Gabe Wildman explained that an excess of $1,000 worth of damage followed Dunmire’s offenses. Dunmire was found guilty of throwing urine on two corrections officers while in the Trumbull County jail.

Wildman further presented to Rice that Dunmire, on Sept. 9, 2023, also threw urine on a medical assistant while vandalizing and breaking a sprinkler head. The state provided evidence through video from inside of the jail, testimony from officers and other findings to prove its case, Wildman added.

“It’s bad enough that you ended up in the county jail, but then you wanted to go and do something like that. That’s disgusting,” Rice said. “If you do that again and you’re in prison, it’s going to be really bad for you.”

Dunmire’s sentence will run concurrently with his separate arson sentencing from Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Sean O’Brien.

Represented by attorney Alexander Keane, Dunmire could have received consecutive sentences, to his eight to 12-month sentence in the arson case.

After his release from prison, Dunmire will be labeled an arson offender, which requires him to register in person with authorities when establishing a residency.

ARSON CASE

Dunmire was arrested after an investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office revolving around a fire set at a home in the 2100 block of South Market Street in Girard.

On June 21, the Girard Fire Department was called to a structure fire. A sheriff’s report states that fire crews quickly extinguished a bulk of the fire from outside before making their way inside. Crews pulled at least one cat from the residence, according to the report.

Residents in the home told investigators that Dunmire had prior altercations with a woman at the residence.

Just before the fire, the occupants said the woman had spoken with Dunmire on the phone and he threatened to “light their house on fire,” a report states.

The occupants told investigators they had been asleep when their neighbors began shouting and banging on the door to wake them up.

Outside the home, they saw a piano on their back porch that was set on fire as well.

O’Brien also cautioned Dunmire that his courtroom already has a capital murder case that could result in the death penalty. Co-defendants Patricia Zarlingo and Brendan Daviduk are awaiting trial for their roles in the January 2023 house fire that killed 16-year-old Chassidy Broadstone.
