Choffin career center to welcome students from Eastern Gateway Community College

YOUNGSTOWN — After recent news that Eastern Gateway Community College is planning to “pause” registration beyond the spring semester, a local school is hoping to fill the gap for some students.

Choffin Career & Technical Center Adult Education is accepting Eastern Gateway students into the center’s dental assisting, practical nursing and surgical technology programs.

Choffin will waive application fees and review transcripts with students to work with them to determine an appropriate track, according to a news release Monday.

“Our typical application fee is $30 and if they had to do a pre-entrance test, it would be $20,” Rhonda Kempe, Choffin’s admissions officer, said.

“But if they are coming over and they have been in the program, I think they’re going to try to move them where they might fit in, so I think they’d be waiving both of those fees on our end.”

Kempe said there may be fees for students to request their official transcript from Eastern Gateway.

Kempe said all of the programs at Choffin’s Adult Education are eligible for financial aid if the students qualify.

“That’s something that they would have to fill out to see what they qualify for,” Kempe said. “Then there’s also, through Ohio Means Jobs and (Mahoning and Columbiana Training Association), additional funding available depending on what county they live in, if they qualify for that.”

Youngstown State, along with other Ohio colleges, are looking to provide opportunities for Eastern Gateway students as well.
