Campbell to limit golf carts on some city streets

CAMPBELL — Those who operate golf carts on certain city streets will soon be subjected to a new set of rules and regulations.

During its regular meeting Wednesday, city council adopted an ordinance that spells out what will govern the use of such vehicles.

Golf carts will be permitted only on streets with a posted 25-mph speed limit or less, such as Struthers-Coitsville Road, council President George Levendis noted.

Under the legislation, golf cart owners will be required to submit their vehicles to annual inspections that police Chief Kevin Sferra or a designee will conduct. The inspection carries a $25 fee to be paid at the city hall building, 351 Tenney Ave., according to language in the ordinance.

Additional requirements are similar to those for motor vehicle operators. The carts will be required to contain brakes and brake lights as well as headlights and taillights. In addition, such vehicles must have seat belts, windshields, steering mechanisms, rear mirrors, tires in safe operating condition and license plates issued by the state of Ohio, the ordinance reads.

Also, valid operator’s licenses will be required to operate golf carts on city streets.

In addition, the vehicles have to be operated under the city’s traffic rules. Violators likely will face a minor misdemeanor charge, according to the language.

Also at Wednesday’s session, Mayor Bryan Tedesco announced that Ohio Edison Co. is repairing more than 100 street lights throughout the city.
