Warrant filed against Girard woman in boyfriend’s death

GIRARD — The Girard Police Department has issued a murder warrant for a woman accused of killing her boyfriend at their Dearborn Street home in Girard.

Kristen V. Schmidt, 30, appeared in Girard Municipal Court on Jan 4., while facing a single count of felonious assault, related to shooting of her 33-year-old boyfriend Michael Cusick.

She was released after posting a $5,000 bond.

Police responded to St. Elizabeth Hospital around 10 a.m. on Jan 4 where Cusick was being treated for gunshot wounds to his stomach or chest area, according to a police report.

He later passed from his injuries which upgraded Schmidt’s charge to murder. However, Cusick was able to tell police the shooting had occurred at 217 Dearborn Street.

Arriving at the home, police spoke to the suspect’s father, who directed police to Schmidt.

Schmidt told police she did have a 9mm handgun inside a lock box upstairs.

When asked what occurred at the home, Schmidt admitted to shooting Cusick, claiming he had been trying to break into the home through the backdoor. Schmidt told police she and Cusick had been fighting “all night” and she suffered from a “history of domestic violence,” the report stated.

Schmidt told police that there were others in the home that were friends of hers but told police that they did not hear the fighting or the gunshot.

Her friends, she said, had left prior to the police arriving.

A preliminary hearing is set to take place before Judge Jeffrey D. Adler on Jan. 24.

Court records indicate that Schmidt had been staying with her father in Campbell.

Starting at $3.85/week.
