Two Struthers shooting cases move forward

STRUTHERS — Police have made progress in two recent shooting investigations, including sending one suspect’s case to the grand jury.

On Wednesday afternoon, Struthers Municipal Court Judge James Melone bound over the case of Austin Beatty to Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Beatty, 24, of Youngstown, was arrested last week in connection with a Dec. 30 shooting at a house on Ninth Street.

A car parked in the driveway was struck multiple times, but nobody was harmed. According to the police report, officers found six spent shell casings in the street, and later determined another vehicle on Ninth Street also was struck.

The primary victim told police he believed it was Beatty, his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. The man told police that Beatty had attacked the woman earlier in the day, and showed police text messages in which Beatty allegedly threatened to shoot up their house.

The man also showed police security camera footage of a car believed to belong to Beatty or a friend of his. The report states it showed the passenger firing at the house and the car before turning around in a neighbor’s driveway and fleeing the scene.

SECOND SHOOTING

Capt. Dan Mamula said police served a search warrant Tuesday night at 487 Seventh St., where a shooting was reported earlier in the day.

When police arrived at the scene, they found spent shell casings outside the house and interviewed an adult and a juvenile who lived there, according to an official statement from the Struthers Police Department.

Officers later obtained a search warrant, and Mamula said they found evidence that will be sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for analysis. He said that analysis will then be referred to the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if any charges should be filed. No one was injured in the shooting.
