Seven charged with rioting at Struthers High School

STRUTHERS -- At least seven students are facing charges in connection to an assault at Struthers High School.

According to a Struthers police report, Tiyan Miller and Kevin Wilder Jr., both 18, and five juvenile classmates are charged with aggravated rioting after attacking another student in the lunch line at the school.

Miller and Wilder were arraigned Wednesday in Struthers Municipal Court, but court records do not state what action was taken. The other students will be processed through the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.

"Most often our Wildcat student population is exemplary and abides by our district code of conduct," Superintendent Peter Pirone said. "The students who defy our code of conduct will experience the appropriate consequences by school administration or law enforcement if necessary."

Pirone and the police report stated teachers broke up the fight, and law enforcement were only called in after the fact.

"In this case, we called law enforcement after the situation ended because we want our students and community to know that certain behaviors will not be tolerated," Pirone said. "We accept and support the legal framework our law enforcement operates within to keep our community safe. The safety of our students is always our top priority."

The report states the incident began about 11:15 a.m. Monday when two students began punching another student, and others joined in. The report states a teacher was hit while trying to break it up. At one point, two students tried to continue fighting, but teachers intervened again.

The report states the victim suffered a black eye and a bloody nose.

All suspected offenders were taken to the Mahoning County jail or juvenile jail.
