Salem man accused of stealing truck to flee house arrest

AUSTINTOWN — A man is in jail and charged with stealing a truck in an attempt to escape authorities.

The Austintown police report states that when Marcus J. Bosworth was arrested on Tuesday, he told officers he was “tired of being on house arrest and wanted to get out of the area.” The report states that Bosworth also cut off his ankle monitor and left it in the Walmart parking lot.

Bosworth, 70, of Salem, is scheduled for arraignment Monday in Mahoning County Austintown Court on one charge of grand theft auto, a fourth-degree felony.

The report states that a man left his Chevrolet pickup truck at his place of employment on Maple Drive Tuesday morning, with the keys in the cup holder. He returned at 2:30 p.m. to find the truck gone.

Security cameras at Newhard Auto Sales on Mahoning Avenue captured video of a man matching Bosworth’s description walking north on Maple toward the business where the truck was parked, then showed video of the truck heading south on Maple, back toward Mahoning.

At the same time, police received a report of a severed ankle monitor found in the Walmart parking lot, which they matched to Bosworth. The monitor showed his movements to the Maple Drive business and then to Walmart.

About 5 p.m., police saw the truck on New Road and pulled it over at Countryside Drive, where they arrested Bosworth and he allegedly confessed to stealing it to evade house arrest.

Records show that Judge Maureen Sweeney has since revoked Bosworth’s bond for cutting off the ankle monitor.

In addition to Tuesday’s charge, Bosworth’s record shows 12 criminal cases and three traffic cases in Mahoning County, dating back to 2022, but nothing before that. Most of them are from 2023, and include multiple counts of receiving stolen property, falsification, criminal damaging, arson, felony theft and at least one other count of grand theft auto.
