Mother accused of abuse
Austintown woman charged with two felony counts
AUSTINTOWN — An Austintown woman wanted on charges of child abuse was arrested earlier this week and later ordered to have no contact with her children while her case proceeds.
Deanne Hartman, 48, of Austintown, was arraigned by video Jan. 8 in Mahoning County Austintown Court on two felony counts of child endangerment and two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence. Judge Scott Hunter imposed a $2,500 cash or surety bond and set a pretrial hearing for Jan. 31. He also ordered that Hartman have no contact with her children while the case proceeds.
According to an Austintown Police Department report, an Austintown officer spotted Hartman driving on New Road near Turner Road on Monday and pulled her over because she had an open warrant through the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office for child endangerment. Hartman was arrested and taken to Mahoning County jail where she was released the same day.
The arrest warrant was issued Dec. 21, after the sheriff’s office completed its investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred May 3.
According to the MCSO report, a deputy was approached by one of Hartman’s children on May 5, while he was working as a school resource officer at a Jackson-Milton school. The report states the child told him Hartman assaulted her and her sister two days earlier at home.
According to the report, the child allegedly said that Hartman yelled at them for making too much noise while they were speaking to one girl’s father on the phone about school. Hartman allegedly pulled one of the girls over the back of the couch by their hair, then put her hands around the girl’s neck leaving scratches.
The report stated that the girl said Hartman allegedly attempted to pull the other girl to the ground the same way but was not able to lift her completely off the couch.
The girl allegedly told the deputy that Hartman has a problem with alcohol and is abusive when drunk, intentionally pulling their hair to avoid leaving any marks. The report states that after speaking to the girls’ school counselor and to a woman with whom the girls sometimes reside, the deputy reported the claims to Mahoning County Children’s Services.
The report states that the two witnesses have documented marks on the girls, but that the girls routinely make excuses to avoid incriminating Hartman.
At the time of the report in December, the girls were living with one child’s father in Alabama, and attempts to reach him, in order to complete a victim’s rights form, have been unsuccessful.
