Hubbard factory worker dies during ‘routine operation’

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — A worker at Ellwood Engineered Castings, 7158 Hubbard Masury Road, died during a “routine operation during the overnight shift,” according to a news release from the company Saturday.

“Elwood Engineered Castings expresses our deepest sympathies to the team member’s family following this terrible incident. We are working to provide support to the family during this difficult time,” Pat Callihan, Ellwood Engineered Castings president, said.

An Eagle Joint Fire District member on Saturday afternoon said he did not know any information on the incident and asked a reporter to contact the fire department secretary on Monday.

“Ellwood Engineered Castings values the safety and welfare of our team members above all. Our hearts are broken as we are trying to process how this tragedy has impacted us and our close-knit team individually,” the news release states.

“We will work to provide resources to help our team through this difficult time, and we are committed to working diligently to assist with a thorough evaluation of the incident.”

The statement said the company was not disclosing the name of the worker.

Pennsylvania-based Ellwood Group in 2018 launched Ellwood Aluminum, an ambitious $72 million undertaking to locate an aluminum cast house adjacent to its existing Ellwood Engineered Castings facility to gain a foothold in the aluminum casting industry.

Founded in 1910, the Ellwood Group operates 10 business units across Pennsylvania, Texas, Ohio, Michigan, Canada and Mexico. The company provides specially engineered metals, iron castings and other products for customers in the oil and gas, mining, power generation, defense and automotive industries.

Its facilities in Ohio are the aluminum and castings plants in Hubbard Township and Walter Metals in Stow.
