Footprints in snow lead to arrests in vehicle break-ins

BOARDMAN — A young man and a juvenile are accused of breaking into cars in a Mill Creek neighborhood.

According to the Boardman police report, officers arrested Deraile Barron, 18, of Youngstown, and his 17-year-old friend on Saturday after they were caught with property stolen from a vehicle on Barbie Drive.

Barron remains in Mahoning County Jail on a $4,000 cash or surety bond following his initial appearance in Mahoning County Boardman Court on Monday on one felony count of receiving stolen property. Judge Joseph Houser set a preliminary hearing for Jan. 30.

Barron also was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a child, resisting arrest and obstructing police business. For those charges, Houser imposed a $2,000 cash or surety bond.

The police report states that officers were called to a home on Barbie Drive about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. The resident there told them he returned home minutes earlier to find the two vehicles in his driveway with their passenger doors open, the center console open, and footprints in the snow leading from the street to the cars.

As police followed the footprints, they saw a Honda Civic in a different driveway with its passenger door open. A computer mouse was found in the snow next to the car, and the owner said his backpack was missing. The backpack contained notebooks and a prescription medication.

An officer driving around the neighborhood then reported a green Mitsubishi Montero with temporary tags parked in front of a house on Windel Way, which intersects Barbie Drive.

Footprints similar to those found near the violated vehicles were found in the snow, heading both north and south from the Mitsubishi.

The report states that police watched the car until a male in a hooded sweatshirt emerged from behind a nearby house. When he saw the police car he went back the way he’d come. Officers observing from farther away saw him get into the Mitsubishi after the police car left the immediate area.

Another male joined him soon after and they started to drive away. Police stopped them and ordered them out of the car at gunpoint.

The report states that the driver, later determined to be Barron, slowly got out of the car but at first refused to comply with police orders and tried to get back into the car, and they had to forcibly put him in handcuffs. The passenger, a juvenile, complied with police and was arrested without a problem.

The report states that the backpack reported missing from the Honda was found in the backseat of the Mitsubishi. Police also found a Chromebook with a sticker identifying it as the property of Youngstown City Schools.

The police report also includes brief descriptions of vehicle break-ins reported later that morning from Windel Way and nearby Sharon Drive, with which police believe Barron and his accomplice were involved.

The juvenile was booked into Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center on a felony charge of receiving stolen property.
