Arraignment set for man accused of attempted theft

30-year-old nearly drove off with woman’s children

YOUNGSTOWN — Jordan L. Moore, 30, of Bennington Avenue, is scheduled to be arraigned today on attempted theft in connection to an incident Wednesday on the East Side in which a man nearly drove off with a car containing two infant children.

Instead, the woman grabbed the man by the shirt, pulling him from the car and “throwing him to the ground,” according to a Youngstown police report.

Her brother also came to her aid and punched the man in the mouth to keep him back from trying to steal the vehicle again, the report states.

The woman said she was sitting in her running, parked car with her infants in the back seat at the corner of Magnolia and Woodcrest avenues at about 2:24 p.m. when a man knocked on the front passenger window, the report states.

She got out of the vehicle to ask him what he wanted; he came around to her door, sat down in the driver’s seat and grabbed the steering wheel, the report states.

She then grabbed him by the shirt and tossed him onto the ground. Her brother then kept Moore from getting up off the ground by punching him in the mouth, the report states.

When police arrived for a call of an attempted car theft, they were looking for a person with a pink jacket and found a man matching the description in front of 1485 Woodcrest as he was walking on the street.

A witness confirmed the man to be “the offender,” telling police he saw the man walk up to the victim’s car and knock on the window, then go around and pull the woman from the driver’s door and get into the driver’s seat, the report states.

He was taken back out, the witness said, adding the man seemed to be “on something or under the influence,” the report states. The man was taken into custody while another officer spoke to the woman after she returned to the scene.

Officers also spoke to the victim’s brother, who “confirmed all the statements were true,” the report states.

Before the man was taken to the county jail, he was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment of “busted lips.” He also had a broken nose, the report states.

The victim’s brother also suffered a busted knuckle on his right hand and told police he would take himself to the hospital later, the report states.

Moore’s arraignment is 1:30 p.m. in Youngstown Municipal Court. If convicted of the fifth-degree felony attempted theft, he could get about a year in prison.
