YOUNGSTOWN -- Four deer were killed with firearms in the Mill Creek MetroParks on Saturday as part of the ongoing deer reduction program, according to data provided to the MetroParks through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The firearm hunts take place in outlying parks, not Mill Creek Park or the Huntington or Hitchcock preserves in Boardman. The specific parks where the hunting took place was not provided.
The four deer were killed at 8:30 a.m. (two of them), 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. There was one deer with at least one antler longer than 3 inches, two does and one button buck, meaning a deer with antlers that have not yet protruded through the skin.
Three of the deer were taken with rifles. The other was taken with a shotgun, according to the ODNR report. There were no archery hunts last week, said Nick Derico, Mill Creek MetroParks natural resources manager.
There were no deer harvested the previous week.
Adding four more deer to the 205 recorded previously brings the total number removed since Oct. 1 to 209.
