The Vindicator names 2 new editors

The Vindicator and the Tribune Chronicle have promoted two staff members to fill editor positions.

Greg Macafee, who formerly served as The Vindicator and The Tribune Chronicle sports editor, has transferred from sports into a news position as metro editor. Macafee will help supervise news reporters, make assignments and edit stories daily.

Macafee, who hails from western New York, holds a bachelor’s degree in communications with a focus in journalism from Slippery Rock University. He also earned a master’s degree in sports journalism at Arizona State University.

His journalism career has taken him to Verde Valley, Arizona, and the Tribune-Review in Pittsburgh, where he worked as both a news and sports writer. He also served as sports editor for Tribune Publications in Tempe, Arizona. Macafee also worked at the Beaver County Times in Beaver Falls, Pa.

He was hired as sports editor here in 2021, where he supervised the sports staff, made assignments, wrote and edited stories and designed pages.

Macafee takes over for longtime journalist and Metro Editor Tom Wills, who recently retired.

Replacing Macafee as sports editor is sports writer Joel Whetzel.

Whetzel holds a degree in political science from West Virginia University. He spent time working as a news and sports writer at his hometown newspaper in Romney, W.Va., and worked as a sports writer and assistant sports editor in Bradford, Pa., before joining the The Vindicator and the Tribune Chronicle staff in 2021.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to have these two very hardworking journalists on our staff,” Editor Brenda J. Linert said. “Each brings an incredible skill set and work ethic, coupled with enthusiasm and vibrance. It’s refreshing to see young people so dedicated to the craft of print journalism, and I look forward to seeing what they will accomplish going forward.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
