Semi on I-80 kills driver of a pickup

AUSTINTOWN — The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a man was killed in a crash involving a semitrailer on Interstate 80 Tuesday morning.

According to a news release, the crash occurred in the westbound lane, west of state Route 46, just before 11 a.m. A semitrailer, headed eastbound, crossed over the center median and struck a 2023 Dodge Ram pickup truck heading west.

The news release states that the semi then continued through the guardrail before stopping in an embankment on the north side of the interstate.

As of 2 p.m., two of the four westbound lanes of I-80 remained closed.

The news release states that the semi was driven by Davit Fluidze, 53, of Manville, New Jersey. Fluidze was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

The driver of the pickup truck, who also was from out of state, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until family are notified.
