Staff report
Salvation Army volunteers in Trumbull and Mahoning counties stayed busy this holiday season collecting donations as part of the Red Kettle campaigns.
In Trumbull County, Capt. Kiley Williams, commanding officer for the Salvation Army of Trumbull County, said they were able to help 722 families (over 1,800 children) and surpassed the kettle goal, collecting $113,000.
Williams said the goal was to collect $100,000.
"Which is great! We are awaiting some final numbers and a few donations coming in, but I believe we are in the $113,000 frame," she said. "It was a good year. One of our themes is, 'Need knows no season,' and although our Christmas effort was a success it is important to know that the need is all throughout the year."
In Mahoning County, Jennifer Hanigosky, director of programs and operations at the Salvation Army of Mahoning County, said the kettle campaign raised $115,000 this season, just short of the goal of $150,000. Hanigosky said 2023 came ahead of the 2022 collection of $98,000.
She said the donations collected are not just for the Christmas season but to help cover costs for programs and services offered throughout the year such as the food pantry, community meals and special events for the public.
Hanigosky said the staff and volunteers worked hard this holiday season.
