Texas man charged in city home invasion

YOUNGSTOWN — A Sugarland, Texas, man, was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated burglary after being captured in the woodline near a house that was burglarized Monday night on Oak Street near McKelvey Lake.

Abass Hussein, 31, is in the Mahoning County jail. He has no court case yet in Youngstown Municipal Court, but is likely to be arraigned there later this week.

Police were called at 8:41 p.m. for a burglary in progress at the East Side home. The caller said the door had just been kicked in. When officers arrived, they saw a tall dark figure running from there toward the rear yard. Two officers chased on foot and could hear voices and branches moving in the woodline of a large field. Another officer joined them in the search, following the bank of McKelvey Lake.

A police dog was deployed and the search continued.

Meanwhile, an officer went inside the house and spoke with one of the residents, who said he or she heard three bangs at the side door. Three masked, armed men in black clothing entered the home, according to a Youngstown police report.

One of the men put a gun to the victim’s head and instructed the victim where to move around the house. The victim and two of the burglars went upstairs with one of the burglars ransacking a bedroom, the report states.

Another of the burglars went into another bedroom and put a gun to the back of the head of the person in that room and struck that victim with the gun repeatedly. That person was working at a computer at the time.

The burglar ordered the victim to open a crypto account, but the burglar did not take any money. The burglar threatened to kill the victim, the report states. The burglar also took the victim’s cellphone, the report states.

The burglar on the first floor yelled something to the two burglars upstairs in what appeared to be a foreign language, and all three men fled the home.

While the officer was interviewing the victims, he learned that a suspect had been found hiding. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for complaints of chest pain and then taken to the Mahoning County jail.
