YOUNGSTOWN -- Police believe the woman, 72, who suffered a gunshot wound Sunday in connection to a homicide was shot while checking to see what was going on in her neighborhood, police say.

The woman was going outside to investigate gunfire that killed a 26-year-old man in a 6:26 p.m. episode when she was struck by gunfire in the lower part of her body.

When police arrived on the double-digit block of Zents Avenue near Logan Avenue on the North Side, they found a man in the middle of the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He appeared to be deceased, and the female also had been shot, police said. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment.

The suspect apparently shot the woman on purpose, police said.

Police are investigating the episode as a homicide and felonious assault.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the police department a 330-742-8911 or Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE. Tips remain anonymous, and a reward may be available.

The homicide is No. 18 in the city this year. The previous homicide was the Nov. 2 shooting death of Edward Lewis, 52. He was found deceased in a home in the double-digit block of Oneta Avenue near Salt Springs Road on the West Side.

The city had 24 homicides in 2022.
