Man, 91, killed in wrong-way crash on I-80
Staff report
HUBBARD TOWNSHIP — A 91-year-old Brookfield man is dead following a wrong way, head-on crash along Interstate 80 in Hubbard Township, state troopers reported.
Troopers said the crash happened about 1:25 a.m. Friday when a semi-truck driving in the eastbound lane collided with the now deceased driver, Gary Wagner, who was driving his 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pickup west in the eastbound lane.
As the two drivers collided head-on, troopers say it forced both into the median and caused the semi-truck and the loaded 53-foot van trailer it was pulling to jackknife.
The semi truck driver, a 72-year-old man from Greenville, Pa., was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Troopers said Wagner was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Trumbull County Morgue.
Hubbard Township Police, Hubbard Township Fire and EMS personnel and a crew from the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by troopers.
