YOUNGSTOWN -- The city saw its third homicide in a week Thursday evening with a shooting death on Fernwood Avenue on the South Side.
The Youngstown Police Department reports that it received a ShotSpotter notification at 7:18 p.m. of gunfire in the 300 block of Ferndale. The 911 center also received calls for gunfire and that a man was shot.
Officers saw a chaotic scene when they arrived and found Austin Mendenhall, 38, in a front yard. Ambulance personnel arrived and determined he was deceased, according to a police department press release.
"Within moments of arriving, hundreds of people descended on the block while patrol officers and the police department's Neighborhood Response Unit were attempting to cordon off the homicide scene," the release states.
Detectives, the police department's crime scene unit and the Mahoning County Coroner's Office arrived to collect evidence and began an investigation.
Dozens of people were outside when the homicide occurred, and the police department is asking that anyone with information contact Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE or 330-746-8YPD. Tips may be left anonymously.
