Police respond to melee at school

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from the Youngstown Police Department on Thursday morning when a fight involving 20 to 30 juveniles broke out in a hallway of the Mahoning County High School at the corner of Indianola Avenue and Gibson Street on the South Side.

Sheriff Jerry Greene said no one was injured or charged with any criminal offenses. But with the number of juveniles, it was deemed necessary to get backup, he said.

The sheriff’s office provides security to the school, which is a nonprofit community dropout and recovery school. The school is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Education and is intended to serve youth who need an opportunity to get on track with their academics.
