Man killed, woman hurt Friday in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — A man who was shot in an apartment parking lot at 990 Compass West Drive on Friday night following an altercation has died.

The Austintown Police Department said it got a call about a physical altercation in the parking lot at 10:07 p.m. A short time later, someone called again and reported shots were fired.

Austintown officers arrived to a “chaotic scene, where two persons were shot, a man and a woman.” Initial reports stated that two suspects fled on foot after the shooting.

The man, whose identity is not being released, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later died at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. The woman underwent surgery and was being treated Saturday, according to an Austintown police news release.

The man’s name will be released by the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office after notification of relatives.

One man was detained and brought back to the Austintown Police Department, where he was interviewed and released. No suspect has been named at this time, the news release states.

Austintown police detectives are attempting to gather information and interview potential witnesses. Anyone who was present or can provide video of eyewitness accounts of what occurred are asked to call the Austintown Crime Prevention tip line at 330-270-5108 or Sgt. Adam Hess at 330-270-5113.

PREVIOUS HOMICIDES AT COMPLEX

The last homicide in Austintown also was at the Compass West apartment complex.

Steve W. Green II, 26, pleaded not guilty in late February in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to a new indictment handed up against him earlier that month in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Ashley Lockhart, 25.

The superseding indictment added three charges to the aggravated murder, murder, tampering with evidence and domestic violence charges he faced earlier in the Oct. 8, 2021, shooting death of Lockhart.

The three new charges are rape, attempted rape and extortion, which also involve Lockhart. Prosecutors say the new charges were filed because text messages in the days prior to Lockhart’s killing indicate Green was threatening to kill her if she did not have sex with him.

Lockhart was the mother of Green’s child, and they had been in a relationship for many years but broke up about a year earlier, a close friend of Lockhart has said.

The rape charge alleges Green raped Lockhart or tried to rape her the same day he is accused of killing her. The extortion charge alleges Green tried to gain “any valuable thing or valuable benefit” by threatening to commit murder or domestic violence against her between Oct. 1, 2021, and Oct. 8, 2021.

Green, of Youngstown, is accused of killing Lockhart, also of Youngstown, outside an apartment building on Compass West Drive late Oct. 8, 2021. Lockhart was on the phone with an Austintown police dispatcher asking for help at the time.

According to court records, Green’s case is still pending in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

About a year before that, Samuel Richard, 31, of Youngstown, was arrested in the fatal shooting death of Keylan Davis, 32, also at the Compass West complex.

Davis was shot in the throat around 10 a.m. Oct. 16, 2020.

A witness said she heard shots and then saw Davis come out of the apartment building and eventually end up lying face down in the grass by the building. He then was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 911 call sheet states that the shooting happened in Apartment 7 of the building, where bullets were noticed on the ground by police officers as well as blood on the concrete steps outside. According to a neighbor, Davis was visiting a woman when the shooting occurred.

Richard pleaded guilty to a charge of murder Oct. 31 on the same day his jury trial was scheduled to begin. He was immediately sentenced to 15 years to life in prison, court records show.
