Liberty woman, 29, pleads guilty
Killed 13-year-old at South Side pool party
YOUNGSTOWN — A woman charged with the fatal shooting of a teenager at a South Side pool party has accepted a plea deal.
Mahoning County Prosecutor Gina DeGenova said Shamara Green, 29, of Liberty, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter with a three-year firearm specification. She was indicted on charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault.
Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge R. Scott Krichbaum will hand down sentencing after a presentencing investigation is completed, but DeGenova said her office is recommending a sentence of seven to nine years in prison.
Green was charged with the shooting death of 13-year-old London Jones, after she fired a weapon toward a group of adults who were arguing in the street in the 400 block of Carroll Avenue.
DeGenova said the girl’s family was consulted and agreed with the terms of the plea deal. In May, when the shooting occurred, police determined that Green was a friend of the girl’s mother.
The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. May 19. Police said at the time that they were frustrated by the scene, not only because the girl never should have been at a party with so much alcohol, but also by witnesses at the scene who lied and delayed the department’s ability to find and arrest a suspect in the shooting.
Green also wounded another person in the foot during the incident. She was indicted on a charge of felonious assault for that shooting. It is unclear from court records what happened to that charge.
