CAMPBELL -- A Campbell man is in jail, accused of creating a tense moment for police attempting to execute an arrest warrant Wednesday night.

Gage Vincent Labonte, 21, of Murray Avenue, was booked into Mahoning County jail early Thursday, charged with possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, and carrying a concealed weapon, a first-degree misdemeanor, among other charges.

A police report states Labonte was in possession of oxycodone, Xanax and other substances, along with a black handgun.

Labonte is due in Campbell Municipal Court for a video arraignment at 9 a.m. today.

Authorities say he may also face a charge of having weapons while under disability, as Labonte has two warrants for failure to comply with probation terms.

Police were searching the area of Jean Street, where the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority's Kirwan Homes are located, for a suspect in another case when they saw Labonte walking near the corner of Jean Street and Murray.

Labonte was dressed all in black, including a mask that covered his entire face. When police ordered him to identify himself, they recognized him as the same person who recently had been removed from the government property after allegedly assaulting someone.

According to the report, police asked Labonte if he had any weapons on him, and he said no but began touching something inside his pockets. Police shined a light on his pockets and saw a black pistol grip inside his right pocket just before Labonte allegedly reached into it.

Police directed him to put his hands on his head but he did not comply immediately. He first removed a cellphone from his pocket as police continued ordering to put his hands on his head. He then put the phone back into his pocket before partially raising his hands.

An officer standing behind him handcuffed Labonte and he was placed under arrest. Police removed a 9mm handgun and a separate fully loaded magazine. They also found a plastic box containing 10 pills of at least three different types.
