3 Columbiana County schools exceed state standards
LISBON — The Crestview, Beaver Local and Columbiana school districts all exceeded state standards on the newly released Ohio Department of Education report card.
The results Thursday reflect how all districts in Columbiana County fared with regard to state requirements.
This year’s report card featured a new overall star rating for districts in addition to the existing star ratings for individual components measured.
The ratings are 1 through 5, with half points included as well, with 5 being the highest rating.
Overall star ratings for Crestview, Beaver Local and Columbiana school districts were 4, 4, and 4.5 respectively.
As far as individual components, which were achievement, progress, gap closing, graduation, and early literacy, all three districts performed well.
The three district’s lowest ratings were in the early literacy component, which measures reading improvement and proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade.
Both Crestview and Columbiana earned 3 stars in the early literacy component, meeting the state standards.
Beaver Local, however, fell just below state standard, with a 2-star rating.
Crestview and Columbiana also just met the state standard in the progress component, with 3-star ratings.
The Crestview district exceeded state standards in achievement, gap closing and graduation components.
The district earned 4-star ratings in achievement and gap closing, with a 5-star rating for graduation, meaning it “significantly exceeds state standards,” according to the Ohio Department of Education.
Beaver Local also earned 5 stars in both gap closing and graduation.
Columbiana earned 5-star ratings in achievement, gap closing and graduation components.
The achievement component reflects how well students performed on state tests while gap closing is a measure of the reduction in educational gaps for student sub groups.
The report cards also provided data showing how the districts fared compared to prior years.
According to the data in the achievement category, Crestview is on an upward trend, with an increase by about 2 percent compared to the 2022 school year, and about 9 percent compared to 2021.
The district has maintained the “advanced” level in the achievement category since at least 2019, which is the earliest year shown on the report card.
Beaver Local and Columbiana are also on upward trends in the achievement category.
Beaver Local increased by about 1 percent while Columbiana increased by about 3 percent compared to 2022.
Like Crestview, they have also maintained the “advanced” level in that category.
