AUSTINTOWN -- A 17-year-old boy is in the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center on a charge of homicide in connection to a shooting Friday night at the Compass West apartment complex.
According to a news release by police Chief Robert Gavalier, a person of interest was developed early in the case after detectives interviewed witnesses at the scene and followed up on leads. The teen was taken into custody late Saturday.
His name has not yet been released.
Gavalier said the investigation is ongoing and police are looking for witnesses who may have more information about what occurred late Friday. He said because the case is active and other individuals may be charged, no further comment will be made at this time.
A police report states that a physical altercation occurred in the parking lot of 990 Compass West Drive just after 10 p.m. Friday. A short time after the initial call, a second call was made saying gunshots were heard.
Austintown officers arrived to a "chaotic scene" and found a man and woman shot. The report states witnesses told police two people fled on foot after the shooting.
The man, whose identity is not being released, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later died at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. The woman underwent surgery and was being treated Saturday, according to a report.
The man's name will be released by the Mahoning County Coroner's Office after notification of relatives.
One man was detained and brought back to the Austintown Police Department, where he was interviewed and released.
