YOUNGSTOWN -- City police have confirmed that Youngstown City School District Chief Academic Officer Aaron Bouie III drove the car that struck Volney Rogers Elementary School art teacher Shane Snyder on Wednesday.
Snyder was struck on Schenley Avenue in front of the elementary school, where he was picketing with fellow members of the Youngstown Education Association.
The union began its strike Wednesday when students originally were scheduled to begin the school year.
Lt. Robert Gentile said the incident occurred when Bouie was attempting to enter the parking lot at Volney.
Snyder was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. YEA spokesman Jim Courim said Snyder is at home as of Thursday but "in a lot of pain."
Gentile said police have received conflicting accounts about exactly what happened.
"We are investigating and trying to get some camera footage," he said. "Once the investigation is complete, we will review it with the prosecutor's office, and they will determine if any charges are filled or what charges are filed."
The city school district has not responded to a request for comment on the incident.
In a news release, Courim said the union is appalled by the incident, which has further galvanized the membership.
"What is the actual goal of this board and administration? Ours is clear. We will fight for our right to defend our students' learning conditions and to have a true seat at the table."
Union members held a vigil Thursday afternoon at Volney in support of Snyder. Parents and students also attended; one held a sign calling for Bouie's resignation.
Union president Eric Teutsch did not mention Bouie by name, but said "one person was driving recklessly, speeding" and "nearly hit a woman who is pregnant."
Teutsch told members that the district is not living up to its motto: "Be respectful, be responsible, be safe."
Courim said he hopes the district will address the situation appropriately.
