Stevie A. Ballard trial starts in 2022 South Side killing of Darrell N. Jackson

YOUNGSTOWN -- Opening statements will begin this morning in the aggravated murder trial of Stevie A. Ballard, 23, of Seventh Street, Campbell, accused in the Jan. 22, 2022, killing of Darrell N. Jackson, 20.

A jury was seated Monday in the courtroom of Judge Anthony Donofrio of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Jackson was found shot to death in a vehicle that drove onto the sidewalk at Market Street and East Philadelphia Avenue on the South Side. The vehicle had multiple bullet holes, according to police reports. Officers discovered Jackson in the driver's seat.

Ballard's indictment accuses him of killing Jackson in a drive-by shooting. Both the aggravated murder charge and murder charge contain a five-year drive-by specification and a gun specification. The latter accuses Ballard of possessing a firearm during the commission of the offense.

Ballard has been in the Mahoning County jail since June 20, 2022.
