Mineral Ridge man gets probation after recording woman in grocery store

CORTLAND — A Mineral Ridge man pleaded guilty in Central District Court on Monday to a single charge of voyeurism after a woman said he recorded her as she shopped inside a South High Street grocery store.

After Kirk Sackela, 50, pleaded guilty to a first-degree misdemeanor charge of voyeurism, it landed him two years of probation and he will have to register as a Tier 1 sex offender.

Following his court hearing, Sackela was served a trespass warning advising that for an indefinite time, he would not be allowed back on the property. He signed the warning.

Sackela was arrested on a warrant on July 25 days after he was seen on security footage following a woman through the Sparkle Market on South High Street.

The man was said to be videotaping her without her permission as she shopped, according to the police report.

Police received a complaint July 18 from the woman, who said that while she was at the store, a man followed her and she believed he was recording her.

Security footage showed the woman enter the store about 7 p.m., and Sackela began following her shortly after, according to the report.

Sackela was reportedly pointing his phone at the woman, and the police report states that the illumination light of his phone camera suggested he was recording her.

Video surveillance described in the report said Sackela could be seen holding his phone at different angles to get a better view of under the woman’s shorts as he followed her through sections of the store.

As she was checking out, Sackela could be seen staring at her before going back to the lobby. A store worker later escorted her from the store after she expressed concerns of being followed.

Sackela left the area, but before doing so, employees were able to take down his license number to give to police.
