Indictment filed in Boardman house fire

Suspect claims gas used to remove tar from basement floor

YOUNGSTOWN — David L. Idleburgh of Boardman was indicted on aggravated arson Thursday in connection with a July 17 fire at his home that is deemed suspicious.

If convicted, Idleburgh, 38, of Afton Avenue, could get about eight years in prison.

Boardman police arrested Idleburgh the evening of the fire. He shared the home with one other person, who is the owner. Boardman police and fire responded about 6:45 p.m. when a neighbor reported smoke coming from Idleburgh’s house.

Boardman fire Chief Mark Pitzer said firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the east side of the house. Pitzer said the fire was under control within five minutes. He said the blaze appeared to have begun in the living room.

Pitzer said the department determined the fire to be suspicious and called in the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office, which sent two investigators and a police dog.

Pitzer said the dog indicated the presence of an accelerant in the living room and the basement, but there was no fire in the basement.

According to the Boardman Police Department report, a neighbor pointed out to an officer that Idleburgh was standing in the backyard of the home. When approached, Idleburgh attempted to walk away from the officer several times and repeatedly asked if he could just leave.

The report states that Idleburgh told authorities he had been using gasoline to remove tar from the basement floor, and that he provided inconsistent statements to multiple officers regarding how the fire began. He then refused to speak any further without the presence of an attorney and was arrested on suspicion of arson.

Idleburgh was transported to the police station, where investigators from the fire marshal’s office interviewed him further. Following that interview, marshals investigators told Boardman police they believed there was sufficient evidence to charge Idleburgh.
