Hubbard native makes living by storytelling in New Mexico

Submitted photo .... Steve Gleydura and his wife Kathleen visit Big Jim Farms in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Gleydura, originally from Hubbard, is editor of New Mexico Magazine.

Hubbard native Steve Gleydura loves story telling and learning new things. That’s why he now works for New Mexico Magazine, where he uses storytelling to help others learn new things.

“I liked people who told stories and I loved reading stories and thinking about them,” he said. “I love introducing New Mexicans to things about New Mexico they didn’t know.”

He began working for New Mexico Magazine in February 2020 after working for various journalism organizations. He is the editor-in-chief at the magazine where he sets the direction of the magazine, assigns stories, edits stories, works with the art department, writes headlines, oversees the company’s Twitter feed and writes.

The magazine is owned by the New Mexico Tourism Department and just released its 100th anniversary issue in July.

Gleydura grew up in Hubbard and attended Hubbard Exempted Village Schools, where he participated in golf, basketball and baseball.

He and his friends would spend lots of time together outside of their school sports.

“We lived in the township and played baseball outside in the back yard, or roamed around and had picnics on our bikes,” he said.

He also spent time outdoors with his parents when they would take summer vacations to Geneva-on-the-Lake or Pymatuning.

“My parents had a pop-up camper and a boat, and we would go on the water and fish,” he said.

He graduated from Hubbard High School in 1988 and began college at John Carroll University in Cleveland the following year. He started as a chemistry major because he wanted to be a doctor, but struggled and switched to English the following year.

“That first year was really hard,” he said. “I liked science and thought I would be good at science.”

While at the university, he continued playing baseball, mostly as a pitcher. He played all four years and traveled to compete in the spring.

“Because the weather in the spring is pretty terrible, a lot of baseball teams in Ohio travel to Florida because the weather is better,” he said.

During his senior year, he and his team participated in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.

He graduated from the university in 1992 and settled in Cleveland after graduating. He got married in 1995 to Kathleen Gleydura.

Gleydura, who originally had planned to be a professor, was offered a job at the Morning Journal in Lorain that same year. Gleydura worked the position of a copy editor at the journal and left in 1998.

His next job was at Northern Ohio Magazine, where he worked as a managing editor for six months.

He then worked as an editor for Inside Business from 1999 until 2001, when he moved on to Cleveland Magazine, which also was owned by Great Lakes Publishing Company. He remained at Cleveland Magazine until 2019. He said he loved working for Cleveland Magazine and recalled a key memory while working there.

“Being there to cover the (Cleveland) Cavaliers championship was amazing, especially as a sports fan,” he said.

He did consulting, freelance and editorial work prior to starting his current job.

Gleydura and his wife now live together in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he moved for work purposes, culture and because he loves the outdoors.

“I think the opportunity to travel a state, learn new cultures and see the history is fantastic,” he said. “The weather is hot, but you have 40-degree days in winter. Sunshine is constant.”

His three kids, Patrick, 25; Molly, 23; and Annie Gleydura, 21, remain in Cleveland, where Gleydura and his wife visit them for holidays.

In his spare time, he enjoys fishing and fly fishing, reading informational books or articles about New Mexico, sampling craft beers from New Mexico and enjoying New Mexican cuisine.

Gleydura has made his way to the Cleveland Press Club Hall of Fame after being president of the Cleveland Press Club twice. While working for Cleveland Magazine, the publication was named best magazine in the state by the Society of Professional Journalists and Cleveland Press Club.
