FEAST DAY: The congregation of St. James Episcopal Church will return to its historic building in Boardman Park at 10 a.m. Sunday to celebrate the feast day of patron St. James, the first of the apostles to achieve martyrdom. The liturgy of Morning Prayer will be followed by a picnic in the Ex-Serviceman’s Pavilion.

The first St. James Episcopal Church building was deconsecrated and relocated to Boardman Park and renamed St. James Meeting House. In 1979, it was entered in the National Register of Historic Places by the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, and is the only building or site in Boardman Township to be so designated.

In 1972, a new church building was completed at 7640 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. Worship is at 10 a.m. Sundays. The typical liturgy is that of Holy Eucharist. Sunday school for children takes place during the liturgy.

OLDEST MEMBER: Jerusalem Baptist Church 2003 Wilson Ave, Youngstown, will honor and remember its oldest member, 100-year-old William “Dollar Bill” Miller. The homegoing event will be at 11 a.m. today at the church.

SERBIAN DAY PICNIC: The 90th annual Serbian Day picnic will be noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church, 39 Laird Ave., Youngstown. Live music with Orkestar Zabava of Pittsburgh, Pa. will be 1 to 5 p.m. in the pavilion. Traditional foods will be available. Admission is free.

ONENESS BLESSING: The Unity Spiritual Centre, 1226 Naylor Lloyd Road, Liberty, will offer a Oneness Blessing at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The program will be given by Paul Christian, who also will be the speaker at the Sunday service. The blessing is a hands-on benediction that brings about changes in the energy of the brain. The program is open to the public.

FOOD FEST: St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown will host its fourth annual drive-thru international food festival from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 18 in the parking lot between the parish hall and the Williamson College of Business at Youngstown State University.

Four feasts will be available for $15 each, which includes dinner, dessert and pop or water: Eastern European, Italian, Mexican and Puerto Rican. Orders will be taken after weekend Masses today (4 p.m.) and Sunday (10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.), and Aug. 5 (4 p.m.) and Aug. 6 (10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.) Orders also will be taken by phone on Aug. 8 and 9 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days by calling or texting committee member Marly Reichert at 330-507-6001 or calling committee member Jack Reichert at 330-755-8128.

Proceeds will benefit the church’s educational fund.

FOOD COLLECTION: St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown will begin collecting nonperishable food items to support the needs of its parish community and those at St. Edward Parish, also in Youngstown, starting Aug. 6. Donation bins will be located at the back and front entrances of the church on the first Sunday of each month.

Suggested items are macaroni and cheese, canned soup, canned meat or fish, canned vegetables or fruit, pasta and sauce, small jars of peanut butter and jelly, crackers and granola bars. Anyone wanting to make a cash donation or donate a gift card to local grocery stores can place their donation in an envelope marked “food donation” and put in the collection basket.

RELEASED TIME: School Ministries of Trumbull County is expanding its programs and needs help throughout the county.

“Released Time” is offered to students as an “off campus” one period per week Bible education class. The organization needs individuals and churches to help teach, transport students when needed and spread the word to students and to other schools.

Current needs are in Champion and Bristol with middle school students. The group’s objective is to interpret scripture correctly for students. The program must be off campus, parental permission needs to be signed and there can be no cost to the school .

LOVE CHARITY ALMS: Love Charity Alms will host the annual Martha J. Hill Scholarship dinner at Enzo’s Banquet Center, 2918 Elm Road, Warren, on Aug. 12. Speaker is the Rev. COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Abundant Life Fellowship, 46469 state Route 46, New Waterford, is sponsoring the 15th annual August Overflow, a one-day community outreach event with distribution of school supplies, clothing and food. The event will be noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 5. August Overflow is funded through the church, businesses and personal sponsors.

LECTURE SET: The 10th annual Nostra Aetate Lecture with Michal Bar-Asher Siegal will be at 2 and 7 p,m. Tuesday at Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center, 2067 Evergreen Road. Cost is a free-will offering. The first lecture at 2 p.m. is “The Rabbi who was a Monk” on Christians Monacsticism and the Babylonian Talmud. The second lecture at 7 p.m. is “When a Heretic and a Rabbi Meet” on Jewish-Christian Dialogue over scripture.

FIRST FRIDAY CLUB: The First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown speaker series will host Joan Lawson on Aug. 3.

Lawson will present “What’s New (and Old) in the Archives of the Diocese of Youngstown” and will take a look at why we need a diocesan archive, what is collected, why it matters, and what hope and history are contained in it. The lecture will be at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield.

Lawson is the chancellor and archivist for the Diocese of Youngstown, a position that brings together the two halves of her professional life — the first of which was spent in public history museums and archives, and the second half in church ministry.

For the church, she spent 22 years in parish and diocesan ministry with an emphasis on religious education, liturgy and pastoral ministry. Prior to life in full-time church ministry, Lawson worked for 20 years in public history doing research, education, exhibits and collections care for historical agencies in Massachusetts, Northern Ireland and Ohio.

After the talk, participants may ask questions.

NEW PASTOR: Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 1110 N. Salem Warren Road, North Jackson, will host the installation of new pastor Zachary Roll at 3 p.m. Sunday. Roll graduated from the St. Louis Seminary in May and was ordained at his hometown church in northeast Colorado on June 4. The church recently celebrated a 50th anniversary jubilee.

LABYRINTH WALK: The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, 4280 Shields Road, has begun its 13th year of labyrinth walks. While the labyrinth is open dawn to dusk year-round, themed and guided labyrinth walks are offered by trained facilitators during the warm-weather season.

This year’s theme is compassion, a virtue central to the programs of Ursuline Sisters mission.

All people of faith are invited to these free, weather-permitting events. Walks last about a half hour.

This year’s schedule is: 6:30 p.m. Thursday — Compassion for God’s Creation; 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 — Compassion for Family; 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 — Compassion for the Marginalized; and 2 p.m. Oct. 15 — Compassion for the Journey.

James Korda, recognized with the 2023 Gabriel Award for Lifetime Achievement and former Catholic Exponent editor and current Catholic Echo staff writer Pete Sheehan, who received first place in the category of regular column for pro-life issues.

• The Diocese of Youngstown’s communications department also received an honorable mention from the Catholic Media Association in the press release category for Justin Huyck and Katie Wagner’s press release, “Diocese of Youngstown announces The Catholic Echo.”

• For his collection of columns in The Priest magazine, which is published by Our Sunday Visitor, Bonnar won a third-place award in the magazine category for best regular column on religious life. Bonnar serves as editor of The Priest magazine. This is the second year in a row that Bonnar’s column for The Priest has been recognized, having received a second-place award in the same category in 2022.
