Poland Village traffic stop case goes to grand jury

Staff report

STRUTHERS — A grand jury will determine whether to indict area businessman Ron Zoldan on felony drug charges.

Standing before visiting magistrate Michael Hosa in Struthers Municipal Court on Tuesday, Zoldan waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Hosa bound over the case to the Mahoning County grand jury and extended Zoldan’s $100,000 bond.

The charges stem from a May traffic stop by Poland Village Police after Zoldan was allegedly caught driving 41 mph in a 25 mph zone on South Main Street. According to the report filed by Poland Village police officer Melissa Williams, Zoldan was talking excitedly and sweating profusely.

He said he was late to pick up his daughter. Williams noticed white residue on the driver’s seat, and asked Zoldan for permission to check the bookbag on the passenger’s side, where she found several plastic bags that were later determined to contain heroin and methamphetamine. Police also found $3,400 cash in the vehicle, the report states.

Zoldan faces charges of drug possession and drug trafficking, both second-degree felonies. He also faces misdemeanor charges of labeling a contraband substance, speeding and operating a vehicle without a license.
