Pickup hits pole, 2 vehicles in Struthers

A Pontiac LeSabre sits in the front yard of a home on Elm Street in Struthers after an accident Tuesday in which a pickup truck struck the vehicle, sending it into the yard. The residence also had a damaged front porch.

STRUTHERS — A woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after apparently losing control of her red pickup truck while traveling on Elm Street.

Police and firefighters were called around noon Tuesday to reports that the eastbound truck had crossed into the westbound side of Elm Street before crashing into and shearing a telephone pole then striking two parked cars and two front yard fences.

The accident occurred about the same time that the Struthers Fourth of July parade was getting underway, though it was not along the parade route. Some safety forces immediately left the parade to respond to the accident scene after the call came in.

Capt. D.J. Aldish of the Struthers Police Department estimated the truck was traveling 30 to 40 mph along a slight downslope on Elm Street near Hawthorne Street. The driver, whose name and age have not been released, may have suffered a medical emergency or had faulty brakes, or the accident could have another cause, Aldish said.

After striking the pole, the truck traveled about six houses down Elm Street, hitting the two cars and two fences. A dark Pontiac LeSabre that had been in a driveway was one of the vehicles that was struck, and it was apparently pushed into the next door neighbor’s front yard at 71 Elm St.

That residence had extensive damage to its front door area and a fence, both of which apparently had been struck by at least one of the vehicles.

No one in the six residences on the north side of Elm Street was injured and no one else was in the pickup truck, Aldish noted.

Scott Kehres of the Struthers Fire Department said the truck evidently veered off the road at some point, striking the pole and, in a chain reaction, hit the other parked cars. The pickup truck was towed from the scene.

A check of FirstEnergy’s outage map showed no power outages in the area from the accident.
