Man indicted in shooting on West Side

YOUNGSTOWN — Arlis R. Casey Jr., 30, has been indicted in the June 6 shooting of a woman on Leo Avenue on the West Side.

Casey faces charges of attempted murder with a firearm specification and repeat violent offender specification; felonious assault with a firearm specification; notice of prior conviction specification and repeat violent offender specification; and having weapons while not allowed.

If convicted, Casey could get more than 20 years in prison.

Court records do not list an address for him other than the Mahoning County jail. He had a Youngstown address in 2021, according to court records.

Casey was arrested June 6 in a 4:30 a.m. shooting in the 1300 block of Leo Avenue. Police said Casey had a dispute with the woman before the gunfire. The woman was in serious condition after the shooting, but police later said they expected her to make a full recovery.

Casey was free on $23,000 bond at the time of the shooting on aggravated burglary charges. In the aggravated burglary case, he is accused of forcing his way inside a home on St. Louis Avenue on the South Side and beating a woman. He later was indicted on aggravated burglary, abduction and misdemeanor counts of theft, assault and petty theft in that case. He posted $23,000 bond March 16.

Casey was booked into the jail on his new case June 8 and remains there without eligibility to make bond. He will be arraigned likely in the next two weeks in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, where a discussion of bond will occur.

In 2012, Casey pleaded guilty to two counts of felonious assault, improper discharge of a firearm at or into a habitation and robbery in a 2010 shooting. He was sentenced to four years in prison. He also was sentenced to two years in prison on probation violation in 2019.
