Man arrested after menacing patrons at Struthers car show
STRUTHERS — A Youngstown man was arrested after witnesses say he antagonized people trying to enjoy a car show at Struthers High School on Saturday.
According to a Struthers police report, Lester Kerr, 54, is charged with illegal conveyance or possession of a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance in a school safety zone, a fifth-degree felony.
The police report states Kerr showed up to the event in an orange AMC Gremlin, allegedly already intoxicated, and continued to drink at the event. Witnesses told police the man repeatedly annoyed visitors by doing burnouts in the parking lot, despite being asked repeatedly to stop.
One witness told police Kerr nearly ran over a friend’s girlfriend and then got out of the car and verbally abused the woman.
Another patron showed police cell phone video of Kerr being told to leave. The video then shows Kerr brandishing a gun he had pulled from under his seat.
Police were able to read Kerr’s license plate from the video and traced the vehicle to his Thalia Avenue home in Youngstown. They went to the home, with support from Youngstown police, where they found the car and saw Kerr exiting the home. He had alcohol on his breath when officers approached, according to the police report.
Kerr denied his involvement in the car show incident, but was arrested. His fiancee provided police with keys to the Gremlin and gave them access to the rear of the property so they could take possession of the car.
Kerr was booked into the Mahoning County jail where he awaited arraignment Monday morning in Struthers Municipal Court. He pleaded not guilty and waived his right to a speedy trial. He was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing Aug. 21.
