Campbell chase suspect appears in court

CAMPBELL -- A man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase Wednesday made an initial appearance in Campbell Municipal Court on Friday.

Devon Marquis Stevens, 32, of Columbus, appeared by video from Mahoning County jail on felony charges of trafficking in methamphetamine and tampering with evidence, misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest, as well as traffic citations for window tint and expired registration.

Judge Patrick P. Cunning accepted Stevens' not guilty plea on the misdemeanors, imposed a $16,500, 10% cash or surety bond; appointed an attorney for Stevens; and set a pretrial hearing on the felony charges for Aug. 4.

Stevens was pulled over on Wilson Avenue for his excessively tinted windows and then led police on a reckless chase through Campbell, a police report states, eventually crashing into an embankment and continuing to flee on foot before he was brought down with a stun weapon. Police found more than 30 grams of methamphetamine, both in the vehicle and some that Stevens tried to discard as he fled. They also found more than $1,900 in cash in the car.

OTHER NOTABLE CASES

Also in court Friday were Dayzia Jaqueta Cobb and David Michael Fields.

Cobb, 34, of Jean Street in Campbell, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment in November 2018. She appeared by video from Mahoning County Jail after being arrested Wednesday on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on May 4, 2021. Cunning rescheduled the pretrial for Aug. 18, and imposed an additional $2,500, 10% cash or surety bond. He also appointed a new lawyer for Cobb because the legal counsel previously appointed by the court is no longer in practice.

Fields, 23, of Douglas Avenue in Youngstown, was arrested on July 21. He faces felony charges of carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property, drug possession, and marijuana trafficking, as well as multiple misdemeanor charges for drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. Fields was initially pulled over for failure to use his turn signal. Cunning imposed a $5,000, 10% cash or surety bond and set a pretrial hearing on Aug. 25.
