West Side shooting suspect in custody

YOUNGSTOWN — A man was arrested in connection to a Tuesday shooting on the West Side that injured a woman while he was out of jail on a $23,000 bond on aggravated burglary charges.

Arlis Casey Jr., 30, was arrested and taken to Mahoning County jail on Thursday on new charges of felonious assault in the 4:30 a.m. shooting in the 1300 block of Leo Avenue.

Police said Casey had a dispute with the woman prior to the shooting. At the time of first reports of the shooting the victim was said to be in serious condition but police on Friday said she’s expected to make a full recovery.

He was charged in January with an Dec. 31 assault in which he is accused of forcing his way inside a home on St. Louis Avenue and beating a woman during a domestic dispute with another woman.

On Jan. 24, a Mahoning County grand jury handed up indictments of aggravated burglary, abduction and misdemeanor counts of theft, assault and petty theft. He posted $23,000 bond March 16.

Casey is being held without bond and will remain in jail as he awaits a court hearing on June 15.

In 2012, Casey pleaded guilty to two counts of felonious assault, improper discharge of a firearm at or into a habitation and robbery in a 2010 shooting. He was sentenced to four years in prison.

After a shooting in 2017, Casey pleaded guilty to possessing weapons when prohibited because of a prior felony conviction. He was sentenced to two years probation but in 2019, was sentenced to two years in prison on a probation violation.
