Voters league, retired city teacher nominated for awards

The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown and a retired Youngstown school district special education teacher are nominated for awards from the League of Women Voters of Ohio for their advocacy.

The Youngstown chapter is nominated for the state league’s Voter Outreach Award for “making a difference in its community with innovative programs, advocacy or educational efforts,” according to a release.

Other nominees for the award are the league’s Cincinnati chapter, Kathy Helmuth of Wooster, Mary Austin-Palmer of Columbus and John Michael Spinelli of Gahanna.

Also, Samie Winick of Salem, a retired Youngstown teacher, is among 10 nominees for the Belle Sherwin Leadership Award, which honors an individual organization that “exemplifies league values of volunteerism, philanthropy and service to the community,” the release states.

Winick is social action committee chair of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and is active in local Democratic politics.

The winners will be announced Saturday at the league’s Trailblazer Awards and Gala in Lewis Center.
