Grohl Alley mural proposal selected

WARREN — David Grohl Alley should get a jolt of color by the end of summer.

A mural proposal by artist Royce Umberger was selected from more than 20 submissions to cover two brick walls in the downtown alleyway dedicated to the Warren-born Grohl, a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee as the drummer of Nirvana and founder / frontman of the Foo Fighters.

“I love the alley a lot. I’m good friends with the people at Modern Methods (Brewing Company), and it’s a great space,” Umberger said. “I’ve done mural work before, but this is the biggest I’ve ever taken on. That’s what made it interesting, to push myself … It’s a good validation of my work.”

Umberger grew up in Akron but came to the Mahoning Valley in 2006 and recently moved to Boardman from Mineral Ridge.

He described his work as geometric and abstract with bright colors, and his proposal merges that style with partial images of Grohl — a from-the-nose-up portrait of the musician in the corner of one section dominated by the word “Warren,” an outstretched arm with a drumstick in another portion, a guitar-playing torso in a third part.

The selection committee included Jessica King, president of the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County board; Sarah Braun, co-owner of Modern Methods Brewing Company; Sara Daugherty from BRITE Energy; Shawn Carvin from the David Grohl Alley Committee; and Warren Mayor Doug Franklin.

The proposals also were displayed outside Modern Methods over Memorial Day weekend, and people could scan a QR code and vote for their favorite.

“We were definitely looking for something fun and colorful,” Braun said. “We loved the idea of subtly honoring Dave Grohl and the history of the alley while not having something super-Dave-Grohl centric,” Braun said. “This was kind of a good balance of the two. It’s a space people enjoy hanging out in, either on our patio or coming through to take pictures, and it will be a fun backdrop for that kind of activity.”

The color and the form made Umberger’s proposal stand out, King said.

“It’s bright and vibrant, with Warren in it and a hint of Dave Grohl,” King said. “It wasn’t so Dave Grohl-focused, but it was enough to keep that theme throughout the alley. The goal was to accentuate the LED lighting in that overhang area, and he was really pulling from those colors.”

Umberger submitted his proposal using two color palettes — primary colors for one and more fluorescent colors for the other. The completed mural will use the same color palette for all portions, and Umberger said he’d pick which one works best based on how the paint looks under those lights.

Funding for the mural project came primarily from the David Grohl Alley committee with additional contributions from BRITE Energy and FACT, King said. The budget is $12,000. King said Tuesday they should have a signed agreement with Umberger soon.

The artist estimated the project should take between 80 and 100 hours to complete. Since the portion of the alley where the mural is located is covered, weather shouldn’t be a major concern, Umberger said, and summer is the perfect time for the project because it takes longer for paint to dry in cold weather.

“By September it should be done, and I hope to knock it out before that,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, and I’m motivated to get started.”

While the focus is on the current project, King said there is a possibility of additional work in the alley, where some of the work originally created for it when it opened in 2009 is weathered and damaged.

“With the amount of submissions we received and the excitement it provided, there is the potential to do more artwork throughout the alley,” King said. “It’s a matter of finding funding avenues to make sure the artists are compensated for what it’s worth.”
