City police charge man in gun case

Derrick E. Nored Jr. banned from possessing firearms

YOUNGSTOWN — Derrick E. Nored Jr., 28, 521 W. Evergreen Ave., is charged with felonious assault, child endangering and discharging a weapon in city limits.

The charges, filed Tuesday and Wednesday in Youngstown Municipal Court, follow an incident just after 2 p.m. Monday in which a man reportedly was grazed by a bullet in the 500 block of West Evergreen Avenue.

Youngstown police said they were called to the location for gunfire and a fight, and they were advised by a third party that a man was grazed by a bullet.

Nored was still at the scene when police arrived. He told police he was assaulted by a Laird Avenue, Warren, man, who is the grandfather of his child. Nored said there was a disagreement over visitation of the child between him and the child’s mother, and she sent her father to Nored’s home to retrieve the child.

Nored said the man punched Nored in the face, unprovoked, while Nored was holding his child.

Nored said he put the child down, and the child ran into the house. Nored then pulled out a gun and fired it once into the ground, causing the older man to run away. That was captured on video shown to the officer, according to the report.

Officers could see a chip in the cement where the gunshot was fired. There was no blood, police said.

Officers discovered that Nored is prohibited from possessing a firearm because of a 2021 misdemeanor domestic violence conviction and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon conviction. Police retrieved a handgun from Nored’s bedroom and took it as evidence, a report states.

Nored said he wanted to file a misdemeanor assault charge against the older man, and police did. Youngstown police contacted Warren police and asked Warren police to carry out a welfare check on the older man.
