Austintown mom, 35, gets probation for negligence

AUSTINTOWN — An Austintown woman was sentenced to two years of probation for reckless homicide in the death of her son.

Ashley Williams, 35, originally was charged with involuntary manslaughter and child endangering in the July 2021 death her 2-month-old son, Dalvin. On April 24, she pleaded to the lesser charge of reckless homicide before Mahoning County Judge John M. Durkin.

In July 2021, Williams reported that her child wasn’t breathing. Five Austintown police officers, the Austintown Fire Department and paramedics arrived to Compass West apartments and found the baby lying on his back near a couch. He had a “bluish” color to his skin and was wearing only a diaper, according to a police report.

Williams told police that she had last seen the child more than eight hours earlier when she changed his diaper about 6 a.m. and laid him down to sleep. She told police that others in the home usually check on the baby, but she could not confirm if they did.

The police report also stated that the father of the infant told an officer that before he left for work, he saw the infant lying face down in a bassinet.

Two other household members who frequently take care of the infant, according to Williams, explained to an officer that they had not fed or played with the baby that day because he was not awake, yet his feet were moving.
