Struthers man, 28, indicted in chase

YOUNGSTOWN — Dominic N. Mashorda, 28, of Creed Street in Struthers, was indicted this week on charges of failure to comply with the order of a police officer, obstructing official business, drug possession and misdemeanor possessing drug abuse instruments.

He’s charged in an April 18 incident in which Youngstown police said he fled from them at high speeds. If convicted, Mashorda could get several years in prison.

The chase began at 2:22 p.m. when officers spotted Mashorda’s vehicle southbound on Glenwood Avenue at Lake Drive with a heavily tinted window, which is illegal. The officers then activated lights and siren, according to a police report.

The vehicle fled onto Volney Road, passing Mineral Springs, Cohasset and West Warren avenues. At the intersection of Volney Road and Old Furnace, the vehicle traveled into a front yard, turned around and went south on Volney Road.

The vehicle went on West Warren Avenue and crossed over Glenwood Avenue, disregarding the traffic signal “with complete disregard to human life,” the report states. The vehicle then made a south turn on Overland, then west on Marion and north on Edwards Street at a high speed.

While traveling on Edwards, Mashorda “disregarded every traffic-control device (stop signs) with disregard to human life,” the report continued.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle, but another officer later saw it on Edwards Street at High Street and resumed the chase. While the vehicle was on Tod Avenue at Irving, it became immobile, the report states. Mashorda, who was the driver, ran on foot, but was arrested a short distance away.

Three passengers were in the car. Officers found a bottle of prescription drugs in the car and a used hypodermic needle. One of the passengers was taken to the Trumbull County line in Liberty because of a warrant on an alleged parole violation. The two other passengers were released.

DRUG CHARGES

Three men also were indicted on lots of drug and other charges after law enforcement served a search warrant on a home on Cleveland Street on the South Side April 21.

Officers announced their presence, resulting in Joe Jackson, 24, of Cooper Street, and Raymond L. Johnson Jr., 31, of East Judson Avenue, fleeing out the back door but being captured by officers nearby. Also arrested was Mario Townsend, 36, of LaClede Street.

The operation was carried out by the Youngstown Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol as part of the Impact Initiative that is focused on areas of the city that have experienced elevated levels of crime related to narcotics and gun violence.

The initiative will run through the spring, summer and early fall and will include the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Ohio Adult Parole Authority and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, officials announced at an April 13 news conference at the Youngstown Police Department.

Officers with the Youngstown Police Department Neighborhood Response unit were among the Youngstown officers who were part of the initiative that involved a search warrant issued by Judge Carla Baldwin of municipal court.

Townsend was among three people who were in the backyard at the time officers arrived. The three did not try to run. Three others were discovered in the stairwell to the basement of the home. Townsend advised officers at the scene that he was concealing cocaine, fentanyl and Oxycodone in his body, leading to some of his charges.
