Stambaugh Auditorium group gets $180K in arts-relief funds

The Henry H. Stambaugh Auditorium Association in Youngstown is getting $180,940 and the Warren Community Amphitheatre Foundation is receiving $47,687 from the first round of the Ohio Arts Economic Relief Grant Program.

The two organizations are among 139 to share $23.52 million from the fund. More than 400 applied for the grants.

The funding comes from money the state received from the federal American Rescue Plan that was supported by congressional Democrats and opposed by Republicans.

The awards were calculated based on organizations’ loss in revenue from 2019 to 2020 and 2021 and their 2022 operating budget.

Many entertainment venues took a significant financial hit when the state closed them in mid-March 2020 for a few months and then restricted attendance because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several still are recovering.

“These grants will help ensure that communities continue to have access to the programming and learning experiences Ohioans love,” Gov. Mike DeWine said in a Friday announcement about the funding.

The Stambaugh Auditorium Association operates Stambaugh Auditorium and also manages the DeYor Performing Arts Center and the Youngstown Playhouse in Youngstown.

The Warren Community Amphitheatre Foundation runs the amphitheater in downtown Warren.

Funding from this program can be used to help pay for employee compensation — excluding bonuses — as well as employee recruitment, rehiring, training expenses, rent or mortgage payments and operating costs.

Those eligible had to be either performing arts organizations that produce shows or cultural art museums.

The largest grant award was $1.5 million. Those getting the maximum amount were the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, the Ohio History Center in Columbus, the Cincinnati Museum Center and the Victoria Theatre in Dayton.

There is $50 million of funding in the program. More than half of it remains after the first round.

A second round of funding will be announced in the coming weeks.

Starting at $3.23/week.
